MONUMENTALARCHITECTURE | 2008

The Monumental Architecture Field School (MAFS) will be held on the Big Island of Hawai'i, June 2 - June 20, 2008. Offered by San Jose State University, this will be a method-intensive archaeological field program open to undergraduate and graduate students worldwide. Project training will be developed in conjunction with the Centre for Archaeological Field Training of Pima Community College from Tucson, Arizona.

Participants will stay in rural Kohala at a private residence deep in historic Halawa Gulch. The focus of the project will be a non-invasive examination of the region's largest prehistoric structures across a wide variety of contexts and environments. An introduction to Hawaiian and Pacific prehistory will be undertaken, often in conjunction with field trips to some of the most impressive locations of the Big Island of Hawai'i.

Students will benefit from MAFS affiliation with other long-term research projects and institutions active in Kohala and Hawai'i. They can expect to be exposed to a wide variety of contemporary problems and approaches to archaeological research in Oceania and beyond.

Tuition of $3,000 includes room, board, all on-island transport (arriving and departing Kona International Airport) and 3 units of college credit. Prospective students are encouraged to contact Jesse in anticipation of the April 15th application deadline.

Directors: Dr. M. Graves (University of New Mexico), Dr. M. McCoy & J. Stephen (University of Hawai'i at Manoa)
